With a total investment of approx. €290 million the Federal Republic of Germany developed the Friedrich Loeffler Institute - a national animal center - at the Isle of Riems. By 2013, the most modern laboratory and stable areas with different levels of safety from L2/S2 and L3/S3 to the highest level of L4vet/S3 and L4/S4 were built on the total construction area of approx. 60,000 m² (newly built area approx. 45,000 m²). In addition, several peripheral structures such as a cell bank, administrative buildings and a conference center were constructed.
The Isle of Riems has been developed into one of the world-leading locations for animal health research. The investment costs of the very demanding high-quality technical equipment for the entire complex reached approx. €120 million.
A canola oil powered CHP unit and a photovoltaic generator as renewable energy sources are in compliance with the requirements of the federal guidelines for sustainable building. In collaboration with Gruneco AG in Basel, BLS provided planning services for all technical systems.
