Integrated climate protection concept for the City of Potsdam
BLS Energieplan prepares an integrated climate protection concept on behalf of the City of Potsdam in particular partnership with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the traffic management centre (Verkehrsmanagementzentrale) in Berlin and seven other particular partnership members. As part of the concept planning of an urban energy concept for the entire city, BLS Energieplan GmbH was commissioned to realise the following aspects:
- Recording and documentation of the initial condition of the heat supply of the existing buildings, including a cadastral energy survey down to single buildings and establishing a heating atlas
- Calculation and documentation of the potentials for reducing GG emissions in the existing buildings
- Calculation of the potential for increasing the energy efficiency of heat generating systems and distribution plants in regions which are not supplied by district and local heat networks
- Calculation of the range of the potential energy and CO2 savings when using renewable energy sources and efficient energy generation technologies
- Development of scenarios for saving energy and gradually increasing the use of renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies
- Development of measures and strategies of action to enable implementation (implementation strategies and model projects)
- Development of a monitoring and follow-up concept
The concept planning is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
Furthermore, the integrated climate protection concept includes the development of an interconnected overall concept in the following areas:
- Urban development concept “Climate-friendly city, CO2 neutral, adjustment strategies”
- Determining the potential of a solar roof
- Public Relations and climate protection concept
Climate protection concept for transport - innovative approaches for mobillity.

CHP concept “Weiße Stadt” (White City)
Fortimo GmbH, a company of Deutsche Wohnen is owner of the heating plant in the White City at the Romanshorner Weg, supplying different flat owners with energy. For reasons of energy efficiency, a study was carried out to check the possibility to construct a CHP plant there. The results of the study had a positive outcome.
The consulting services offered by BLS Energieplan refer to the concept itself, to preparing the contracting tendering as well as to the evaluation and participation in the negotiations.

Energy concept for Deutsche Flugsicherung DFS, Langen
BLS Energieplan was commissioned to prepare a combined heat, power and cooling concept for the central energy facility at the site of Deutsche Flugsicherung DFS in Langen. The aim of the study is to consider not only the economic energy generation, but also the security aspects of the DFS. Furthermore, the concept includes a preliminary design that takes into account the implementation during operation without supply restrictions of heat, cold, electricity and emergency power. Different power generation options will be studied according to the aspects of ecology, availability and cost-effectiveness for deciding on the reconstruction of the systems.

EUREF
BLS Energieplan GmbH was commissioned to prepare the energy concept for one of the largest development areas on the former GASAG premises in Berlin-Schöneberg. The centrepiece of the development will be the foundation of a private university for energy research - EUREF - which also lent its name to the entire development area.
More than 100,000 m² of office space, floor area and hotel space will be built by 2015. The requirements of the concept are to realise the first CO2-free energy supply for an office and business park. If implemented this would be the first project of this type in Europe.
BLS Energieplan GmbH made different analyses based on deep geothermal energy with an integrated combined heat and power generation plant or a heat pump. The favoured options all have a CO2 neutral supply on the basis of a combined heat, power and cooling generation in common. BLS Energieplan GmbH provides support throughout the project ranging from the assessment of the different options to the favoured option by incorporating a geological survey report. The decision taken in favour of a certain system will depend on the drilling depths (1,000 to 3,500 m) and the system-oriented view in terms of building services engineering. The implementation of the concept is planned for 2011 depending on the progress of construction work.

Luftschiffhafen Potsdam, future- and energy-oriented site development concept
The development area Luftschiffhafen Potsdam of 22 hectares in size is mainly used by different competitive sports facilities, distributed across the whole area. The existing building substance is in varying states of preservation – ranging from empty and demolishable to as good as new.
The municipal company Pro Potsdam prepared a multi-layered development concept for this site. The preparatory assessment of the site development for the construction of a multi-purpose sports hall suitable for competitions on the site was an integral part of the development task.
As part of this task, BLS Energieplan GmbH developed a future- and energy-oriented overall concept for the site as integral part of the urban development concept.

FWG - carbon footprint
The domestic hot water requirements of a  senior-assisted living facility on Krullstrasse in Greifswald are bivalently covered by using a solar thermal system in combination with the district heating system.
For assessing the CO2 emissions associated with the domestic hot water supply, the amount of heat generated for this purpose from the collector system and the district heating network, supplied to the building over a period of one year, is assessed on the basis of the primary energy used.
For this purpose Fernwärme Greifswald GmbH continually records the monthly amount of energy and water supplied as part of the domestic hot water supply over a period of one year. Specifically this includes
- Total power consumption of the entire system,
- Power consumption of the filling pump (PS1) district heating for the provision of hot water,
- Power consumption of the circulation pump (PZ),
- Power consumption Logasol control unit with filling pump (PSS) solar circuit,
- Power consumption of Logalux LSP with filling pump (PS2),
- The total amount of district heat,
- The amount of heat supplied by the hot water district heating circuit,
- The amount of heat supplied by the solar system circuit and
- Hot water consumption via cold water meter.
In this context, BLS Energieplan offers to calculate the carbon footprint for the domestic hot water supply of the building on the basis of the building-related annual fluctuations in heat supply and power consumption as well as the CO2 emission factors of the district heating and the power consumed and to compare the results of the carbon footprint of a conventional domestic hot water supply with the ones of natural-gas fired condensing boilers.

Design engineering study on developing the cost-effectiveness of operating the district heating and power generation plants as well as heat distribution networks by the Fernwärme Greifswald GmbH in the period between
2005 and 2020.

Since preparing the energy supply concept for the City of Greifswald (by BLS Energieplan) 13 years ago, the energy industry framework has changed in Germany. This was partly due to the changing legal conditions on European and national level (partial liberalisation of the markets, changed weighting of the subsidies and taxation (such as the German CHP law, environmental tax, Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV) 2000, Waste Ordinance). Furthermore, the grown urban structures changed after the fall of the Berlin wall with a certain dynamics into a direction that influences the existing structures of heat supply and will even do so more strongly in the future. The study qualifies and quantifies the scope and economic impact of this development. Furthermore, possibilities are examined to maintain and/or improve the cost-effectiveness of operating the existing CHP generation and distribution plants in the future.
